Kim has a tranquil existence with his father as a farmer on their planet until one day when a runaway spaceship is discovered approaching his father's land at fast speed. Kim climbs on board the spacecraft to save his father and manages to land it safely before it crashes. On board the spacecraft, he discovers a critically injured lone survivor who begs Kim to carry something of his to the Galactic Fleet in his last words. He then moves something hooked to his arm onto Kim's arm. It was a Lens, and transferring it should have been impossible, yet holding it has transformed Kim into a Lensman. It not only bestows unexpected powers to Kim, but it also provides critical information for her.
