It takes place in the past and provides an insight into the Saiyuuki quartet before their creation and trek to the west. The first OVA begins with Sanzo and his master, as well as Ukoku (known as a later Ni Jianyi). The second OVA depicts Goku and Sanzo's first meeting. The third OVA focuses on the events following Hakkai's misdeeds and trial (as seen in the first season of "Saiyuuki"), as well as his decision to live in Gojyo's house.
