An animated film based on the life of Ryoukan, a real-life Buddhist monk and renowned poet who lived in 18th-century Japan during the Edo Period. Despite being born into an affluent family in Izumozaki, Ryoukan chooses to forego the luxurious life he would have inherited in order to learn the ultimate meaning of life via Buddhist teachings. From his early manhood, he is subjected to a succession of severe trainings that necessitate a lonely and poor existence. Throughout it all, he has remained an exceedingly modest and humble guy, a real humanitarian who embraces everyone for who they are while renouncing all worldly fame and fortune.
