Ryouhei Arisu is a high school student with no goals who want to escape what he perceives to be a worthless existence. One night, he and his two pals Daikichi Karube and Chouta Segawa witness an unusually big firework soar into the sky, signaling a lasting shift in their life. The three are transported to the Borderland after being blinded by the extremely brilliant explosion. The only people in this planet are participants in a deadly game in which specified duties must be completed in order to survive. Ryouhei feels alive for the first time in his life as the three begin to play to figure out how they can get back home.
